A fire at a home in Hamilton led to one person being taken to hospital and caused significant damage after flames broke out Wednesday night.

Assistant Deputy Chief of Hamilton Fire Ryan Coburn says the department responded to the fire on King William Street around 9:30 p.m.

Coburn says the blaze started in a bedroom on the second floor of the home and the tenant was on the front porch upon the arrival of emergency crews.

According to Coburn, witnesses reported that a resident had jumped from the second floor of the home.

A representative from Hamilton Paramedics tells CHCH News that a man in his 50’s was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition with injuries sustained from jumping out of a window to escape the fire.

A neighbour who lives on the first floor of the home, spoke on the incident.

“I was in my room, watching tv and then I heard yelling. I come out and look – the neighbour, the roommate —, he’s coming down the stairs, says he broke his leg, something burning on the ground,” he said.

“So I put that out, look up and all I see is dark gray smoke and that’s when I yelled for everybody to get out of the house.”

The neighbour said the house is a combined duplex that is home to a total of seven tenants.

“As soon as I got everybody out … next thing you know the fire department showed up.”

Coburn says the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
