The president of McMaster Children’s Hospital says approximately 100 tonsil and adenoid surgeries have been delayed after two children died following the procedures since May.
Hamilton Health Sciences paused tonsil and adenoid surgeries for children 17 and under on June 4. Since then, outside experts have been reviewing that pediatric surgery program.
“As a world-leading pediatric hospital, our goal is to provide the best possible care for all of our patients – they expect and deserve nothing less. As such, the review will be comprehensive,” Bruce Squires said in a video update Friday.
The health network says both children died after being discharged from McMaster Children’s Hospital.

One of them died the day after their procedure and the other child died nine days after their surgery.
HHS says there is no apparent connection between the two deaths.
It says only emergency pediatric tonsil and adenoid surgeries are proceeding and that all adult ear, nose and throat surgeries will continue.
The hospital says it is in the process of contacting patients and their families about upcoming scheduled surgeries.
