The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is the latest addition to the Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM) ‘Solve the Crisis’ campaign.
The initiative, which launched last month, aims to address the growing need for homelessness supports in the province.
Marianne Meed Ward, Burlington mayor and chair of OBCM, said while the government has allotted some funding to solve this problem, it is “not consistent, or enough.”
“This is a health issue, this is a housing issue, and it’s a humanitarian issue,” Meed Ward said.
In a statement released Wednesday, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce said the city could “emerge stronger and more inclusive” through this project.
“The Chamber recognizes that these critical issues pose significant threats, not only to the well-being of individuals, but also to the economic stability of Hamilton’s business community and the broader population,” the statement read.
“We need the collaboration of businesses, governments, and community leaders to solve this crisis.”
This announcement comes as Hamilton’s city council continues to discuss the details of the recently approved plan to reduce homelessness and manage encampments.
Mayor Andrea Horwath says the goal is to have these temporary shelters in place by the time the snow flies.
