Good Friday: Where to get your Fish & Chips

On Good Friday it’s tradition for some religions to avoid meat and serve up fish instead, causing a frenzy at local restaurants every year.

Hutch’s on the Beach is already one of the busiest spots to grab fish and chips in Hamilton and on Good Friday, it’s even busier. Hutch’s manager Rick Creechan says people were lined up as soon as they opened their doors and says, “It’s the busiest day of the year.”
Many people CHCH News spoke with say waiting for fish and chips on Good Friday is worth the wait. Hutch’s says it will go through around 840 pounds of fish today, which equates to over 2,000 pieces.

Parkdale Fish & Chips says they get so busy that they set up chairs outside for people to wait. They also don’t answer their phones and are available for walk-ins only. Owner Judy Zver says, “This is the only day we don’t take phone orders, all the other days we do.”
Raymond Rachner who works at Parkdale Fish & Chips says, “… it’s very hectic, it’s like the longest day ever, but it’s a lot of fun, we have fun here.” They say they were preparing for today since 4 a.m. Rachner says, “We did 20, 50 pounds bags of potatoes, and we did 400 pounds of haddock we have for today.”

Plenty of customers say they came early to avoid the Good Friday rush.
