Global protests mark one year since Hamas attack on Israel

First Published:

Around the world tonight, the focus is on the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.

Last year, on October 7th, Hamas fighters from Gaza attacked civilians in Israel, killing nearly 1,200 Israelis and taking about 250 hostages, including several Israeli-Canadians.

Since then, Israel has waged war on Hamas in Gaza, with Palestinian authorities saying 42,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Hundreds of thousands of people were protesting worldwide this weekend for and against Israel’s response to the attack.

Protestors marched in major cities, calling for an end to Israel’s attacks on Hamas in Gaza and now on Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Israelis to stand united against what he called an “axis of terror” led by Iran.

The United Nations Secretary-General called the Hamas attack a year ago unspeakable violence that “scarred souls.”

He said it was time to release the hostages and stop the war.

Canada’s federal government says it condemns the Hamas attack and is demanding the release of the hostages while it expresses concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In Gaza today, Palestinians say 25 people were killed in an Israeli attack on a mosque and school.

And Israel kept up its attacks on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
