Fort Erie residents hunker down as snow squall warning stays in effect

Fort Erie is getting its share of cold, wintery weather as a snow squall warning stays in effect Monday evening.

The area is really getting hit hard with lake effect snow causing poor visibility and problems with driving conditions.

Ida McRadey has lived in Fort Erie for over 80 years and says she knows exactly how to deal with this wicked winter weather.

“We got groceries, lots of water, we got our medicine, we’ve got everything set up,” McRadey said.

Daryl Havil clears roads for a living, so he knows how dangerous the roads can be.

“A lot of people stuck, a lot of front wheel drive cars stuck,” Havil said.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says it’s going to get worse.

“Snow squall warning in effect for the area likely to remain in place through the evening hours,” Coulson said.

People travelling back and forth to the United States on the Peace Bridge are having to deal with bad weather, with a lot of snow, high winds and very cold temperatures.

The heavy snow and cold temperatures have not been able to keep Buffalo Bills fans away.

They were asked on X to come out and help shovel snow out of the stadium before Monday’s game.

Many answered the call and the game went ahead. Although, getting home from the game might be challenging.

“Driving conditions through this evening into Tuesday, perhaps even into Wednesday, could be tricky for that southern tier Niagara Region so really important for folks to stay on top of the latest forecast and watches and warnings from Environment Canada so they make sure they understand not only what the weather is doing in their location but what the weather may be doing in the direction they are driving into,” Coulson said.

McRadey says even though the weather is bad she will still try to deal with getting her chores done.

“As long as they keep the roads, the main roads, clear and it’s salted, we’re fine,” McRadey said.

For people driving in that area, especially coming over the Peace Bridge, maybe coming back from the Buffalo Bills game, delays are expected.
