Former professional hockey player Peter Mahovlich, 76, dropped out of high school at Cathedral high school in Hamilton in his final year to play for the Detroit Red Wings.

Mahovlich had a very successful NHL career including four Stanley Cups and was a part of Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series but he says he’s always regretted not getting his high school diploma.

He spoke with students on Wednesday ahead of graduation and said, “That’s what I’m here for today to explain to the kids how important it is to make the right decisions because as we get older we’re responsible for all our decisions.”

Mahovlich will be receiving his honorary diploma at Cathedral high school Wednesday evening alongside the 2023 graduating class. “This is going to be the biggest honour I have ever received. I know my mother and father are going to be so proud where ever they might be.”
