Florida is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make landfall on Wednesday.
Officials say evacuation efforts are underway, urging residents along the coast of Florida to leave before the storm surge moves in.
As of Tuesday morning, the National Hurricane Centre says Milton is an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane, and will remain dangerous until it makes landfall.
To ease the process of getting people away from the coast, Florida’s Department of Transportation has activated its emergency shoulder use to give an extra lane of travel.
As the area braces for impact, a number of major airports are closing their terminals.
Orlando, Tampa, and St. Pete-Clearwater Airports are all experiencing closures.
Dozens of counties are under a state of emergency ahead of the storm, according to a media release from Florida Gov. Ron Desantis.
Milton threatens a region still recovering from Hurricane Helene just 12 days ago.
Officials are projecting the storm could bring widespread flooding, and winds reaching up to 200 km/h.
