A fire on Barton St. last night caused over $400,000 in damages as the building suffered extensive structural collapse.

The Hamilton Fire Department received multiple calls shortly before 5 p.m. about the fire. It engulfed a two-storey, brick building located at 731 Barton St. East.

The building housed residential units on the second floor with commercial space below.

When firefighters entered the building, they reported heavy fire on the first and second floors with the blaze extending into the attic.

Crews used two aerial trucks to gain access to the roof and ensure the fire was contained, removing the roof and assisting with interior firefighting operations.

The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damages.

There are no reported injuries as a result of the fire. The cause is not known at this time and members of Hamilton police will be investigating.
