Fire in Welland

A fire that broke out late this morning in Welland has destroyed two workshops belonging to a young family of four. As many as five explosions made it difficult for the Welland Fire Department to battle the blaze.

When Welland fire fighters arrived on Lyon’s creek road, just before noon, they had several challenges before them.

Todd Andersen watched as fire fighters had to back off. He says the flames rose 6 metres into the air that engulfed the first barn thatthe owner had used as a shop to repair and restore cars. Eventually the flames spread to the second shop.

Not only were the flames hot, but it was hot outside, which caused problems for the firefighters themselves as they tried to stay cool.

As many as 31 fire fighters worked to put out the flames. The owners of the two buildings and their two small children were not hurt.
