One person was taken to hospital in critical condition following a structure fire at a Hamilton residence on Wednesday.

The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Wilson St. near West Ave.

Fire Chief, David Cunliffe says first arriving crews reported heavy smoke showing from a two storey home.

Crews who had entered the residence to initiate a search and rescue said the fire spread to all floors and in the walls of the home, which caused over $500,000 in damages.

During the search, fire crews found a person on the main floor and removed them from the building where life saving measures were performed by paramedics and firefighters. The patient was then taken to hospital.

Cunliffe says the fire was quickly knocked down, but not before causing significant damage to the interior of the residence, including holes through both the fire and second floors.

Two cats were also recovered and turned over to the SPCA.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and the Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified.

No other injuries have been reported.
