The federal government and City of Hamilton are investing nearly $200 million for improvements to affordable housing.

The federal government is investing over $145 million for the initiative, which will fund repair of 6,290 affordable housing units.

The federal funding was announced by Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Ahmed Hussen.

“”Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home,” said Hussen, who is also responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

“Today’s announcement for the rejuvenation of nearly 6,300 affordable homes across Hamilton will improve the living standards and housing conditions for thousands of vulnerable residents and families across Hamilton.”

Another $48.5 million is coming from the City of Hamilton.

The government says many of these units will be for priority vulnerable groups, with almost half of them dedicated to seniors.
