Fantastic Four (or Fant4stic as they’re presenting it on the posters) is Fox’s latest attempt to establish a franchise based on Marvel’s oldest superhero team. Josh Trank (Chronicle) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater. The film stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell as the titular foursome, plus Toby Kebbell as Victor Von Doom and Reg E. Cathey as Dr. Franklin Storm.

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. Set in contemporary New York, this retelling focuses on the Four before they become a team – when they were four young idealistic adventurers who make a headstrong leap into the unknown. FANTASTIC FOUR focuses on the human drama of relatable characters that at first don’t perceive their new physical abilities as advantages, but as daunting, if not impossible, challenges.

One thing Trank loves about the Fantastic Four is that they weren’t really superheroes. “They were explorers and adventurers. They were always going places, running into danger on other planets or other dimensions. A lot of their struggles are very much symbolic of the normal struggles that any young person goes through.”

Fantastic Four is rated PG.
