Family of the man killed by Hamilton police still waiting for answers

First Published:

The family of the man killed by Hamilton police two weeks ago say they still don’t know why their father was shot in the back of the head.

Jason Peterson’s oldest daughter, 18-year-old Mackenzie says her family has been given no information from police, as the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is still looking into the case.

On July 7th, in the convenience store parking lot on the corner of Cannon and Gage Sts., surveillance footage shows 42-year-old Jason Peterson getting into the gold car, a marked cruiser then pulls in and officers get out, guns in hand.

Police say they had been looking for a man who was involved in some sort of domestic incident before this shooting.

The family says it appears as though no de-escalation tactics were used by police before Peterson was shot in the head.

Peterson’s family and friends gathered at city hall calling for police to be defunded.

There has been no update from the SIU, the family’s lawyer says a lawsuit has not been ruled out, as they are considering all options.
