Escalating violence draws concerns of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza

First Published:

Israeli troops are reportedly preparing to attack on foot in the face of warnings of a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Israel has kept up with its bombardment of Gaza, with strikes from both air and land as the war entered its sixth day.

This comes as more than 300 thousand reservists have been called up by the Israeli army in preparation for a potential ground assault.

Thus far, 2,700 people have been reported dead since the violence erupted late last week.

Those who remain in Gaza are huddling for safety after power and water was cut off by Israel.

Mohammed Ghalayini spoke with CHCH News from a hotel basement in Gaza where he is currently taking shelter. He says the hotel is surrounded by “utter devastation” outside.

“People, people are afraid. People are afraid for their lives, for their children.” said Ghalayini.

Humanitarian groups say people in Gaza are struggling with no power, no fuel and no food or water allowed into the area.

With 150 reported hostages being held in Gaza, Israeli officials warn that they’ll keep the area sealed off until they are released.

Grief over the attacks in Hamas has been pouring out in Israel.

In a state of shock and grief, Thomas Hand, a father who lost his 8-year-old daughter Emily in a Hamas attack on her Kibbutz spoke out Thursday.

“They just said we found Emily, uh, and she’s dead and I went, yes. I went, yes and smiled because that is the best news of the possibilities that I knew. That was the best possibility that I was hoping for. She was either dead or in Gaza. And if you know anything about what they do to people in Gaza, that is worse than death.”

At this time, Global Affairs Canada says they have been made aware of the deaths of three Canadians and says that four more have been reported as missing.

Global Affairs is additionally reporting that there are more than 5,685 Canadians registered in Israel and 465 registered in the West Bank and Gaza.

Two flights carried Canadian citizens out of Israel Thursday as officials say they are moving to help those still in Israel make their way back to Canada with more flights scheduled for the upcoming weekend.

However, two members of a Hamilton family say that they had to take a taxi from Jerusalem to Jordan to escape the warzone, with no help from Canadian officials.
