Elderly woman attacked during daytime robbery in Smithville

A woman in her 70s has been attacked during a robbery in Smithville Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the woman was getting out of her parked SUV in the area of Convenient and Brock streets.

She was then approached by a masked man asking for a ride. He demanded for her keys and threatened the woman after she refused. The man threw her to the ground multiple times as he struggled for her keys.

Officers said the woman has minor injuries as a result.

He got into her car, but several people who saw what was happening forced him out. A bystander then ran after the man to recover the SUV keys. They were able to pull the suspect’s red hooded sweatshirt off too.

However, the suspect was able to escape.

Police describe the male suspect as approximately five-foot-five tall and between 15 to 20 years old. He was last seen wearing a black mask and possibly a black shirt, black pants and had been wearing a red hooded sweater.

Investigators are asking any residents or businesses in the area between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday to review their security cameras.
