A demonstration took over downtown Hamilton Thursday afternoon to call for defunding police.

Over 100 protesters took over the Main St. near Bay St. around noon.

They painted the words “Defund the Police” right outside city hall, closing Main St. for most of the day.

The group is calling for an immediate 20 per cent reduction in the police budget.

They argue that money could be better spent on social services and programs.

A police services board meeting was scheduled at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

On the agenda was the nearly 100 letters the board received from the public calling for the defunding of the police, and restricting the purchase of military-like equipment for officers.
