A two-year-old English mastiff almost died after being left in a hot car on King Street on Saturday.

Hamilton Police rescued Andre and his owner has been charged. But police say that wasn’t the only call they received yesterday about dogs being left in vehicles.

It was just after 4:00 on Saturday when police received a call from the Budget Inn on King Street about a dog left in a vehicle.

“The dog was in the car for two hours and, yesterday being a warm day, the temperature inside the vehicle was very warm,” said Staff Sgt. George Narozniak of Hamilton Police.

But the SPCA says even if it’s not that warm outside it can quickly get warm inside a vehicle.

“Temperatures can be a little bit cooler but once you have that humidity that is peaking, that’s where we need to be concerned. It’s the heat that will build up inside the vehicle it’s like being inside a tin can,” said Vivian LaFlamme of the Hamilton SPCA.

When officers arrived at the Budget Inn they had to break the car window to get the dog out. After breaking the window, police say the dog was unconscious and dripping in sweat. They rushed into the front desk to get some ice to cool the dog down.

The dog, whose name is Andre, was taken to the Blue Cross Animal Hospital on King Street.

The dog was in critical condition, but managed to pull through and is doing better. The SPCA says quick thinking by Hamilton Police saved his life.

But others arent so lucky. Three dogs died in California on Thursday after being trapped in a hot car. A fourth is in serious condition.

Hamilton Police say this wasn’t the only call they received on Saturday.

“We recieved more than one call yesterday on different locations, however sometimes the owners do come back before we arrive and we never know where the animals are,” said Norozniak.

The dog’s owner, a 48-year-old man from Brantford, has been charged with cruelty to animals. The SPCA says he will get his dog back until the case goes through the courts.
