War-memorial that honoured Ukrainians who fought with Nazis removed from Oakville cemetery

A monument that honoured a paramilitary division of Ukrainian soldiers who fought alongside the Nazi Party has been removed from a cemetery in Oakville, according to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre (FSWC) for Holocaust Studies.

The center is hailing the removal as a victory, saying it’s been fighting to remove the monument from the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian cemetery for years.

The monument was dedicated to the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the S.S., which was comprised mostly of Ukrainian soldiers and was under Nazi command.

“The existence of this monument has been a longstanding concern for the Jewish community,” said FSWC spokesperson Dan Panneton.

“Unfortunately, it drove a wedge between the Jewish and Ukrainian communities at a time when solidarity in the face of the ongoing war is so important,” said Dan Panneton, FSWC spokesperson.

Last year the federal government came under fire after MPs of all political stripes honoured a former soldier from the same unit with a standing ovation in the House of Commons.
