Construction on a 100-year-old Titanic-era ship has begun.

The S.S. Keewatin was built in Scotland in 1907 and it’s now the only Titanic-era ship left in the world. The construction of the ship’s deck will be restored while in Hamilton.

The Keewatin once carried cargo and passengers around the Great Lakes up until the 1960s.

The Keewatin made its way to Hamilton from a museum in northern Michigan, but when this restoration project is complete it will be shipped to the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes in Kingston.

“I think people will really enjoy it when they come, and it’s all dressed up, and staged properly,” Doug Cowie said.

“We are building an exhibit for it in the next year, so people will have some orientation before they board the ship and get a tour.”

The S.S. Keewatin will be at Heddle Shipyards in Hamilton until September.
