Climate disaster fund approved at UN’s COP28 summit

The pressure to phase out fossil fuels mounts at this year’s annual climate change summit. Thursday was day one at “COP28,” which is being held in Dubai.

United Nations delegates kicked things off by agreeing to adopt a new, global fund to help compensate countries struggling to cope with loss and damage caused by climate change.

Delegates at COP28 opened the door for nations to announce their contributions to the fund, as they meet for two weeks at the conference.

The U.S. says it will give $17.5-million to the fund, Britain is pitching in $51-million, but it’s unclear what Canada will be pledging to global cause.
