The City of Hamilton says it will open up additional COVID-19 vaccination appointments as it gets more doses.

The province opened up vaccination booking to all residents as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Several Hamilton residents who tried to book reported finding no local appointments available.

But it’s not just a Hamilton problem. Health units across the province warned that appointments might not be available right away amid skyrocketing demand.

A spokeswoman for the premier’s office says more than 183,000 vaccine appointments were booked within the first two hours of expanded eligibility.

“We appreciate that many people are trying to book vaccine appointments and are frustrated. The expanded eligibility has created a surge in demand for available appointments,” said the city in an email to CHCH News.

“Over the coming days as we receive more vaccine supply additional appointments will be made available on the booking system. We encourage everyone to keep checking back. In time everyone will have the opportunity to book an appointment.”

Winterberry Family Medicine in Stoney Creek was booking vaccine appointments for the weekend and next week.

Halton Region will open up booking to residents 18 and older starting Wednesday. The region has its own vaccine booking portal.

Public health tells us they are booked for the month of May and are now booking appointments in June.
