The City of Hamilton has announced a new by-law that outlines specific requirements for short-term rentals in the city, combating arising issues with Airbnbs.

The by-law introduces new licensing, fees, registration and inspection requirements and goes into effect at the beginning of next year.

It states that people will only be able to rent out their primary residence short term, which is defined as a place where a person lives and designates as their principal residence on government records.

These new requirements are meant to address evolving changes in travel and tourism, as well as increase the housing supply in Hamilton in the wake of an affordable housing crisis.

Monica Ciriello, Director of Licensing and Bylaw Services, Planning and Economic Development, said the new by-law is a testament to the City’s commitment to shaping a future where Hamilton remains a great place to live.

“Hamilton is committed to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where everyone can thrive. Our new short-term rental by-law reflects our dedication to responsible growth, balancing the needs of our residents and visitors alike,” Ciriello said.

“We believe in striking a harmonious chord between economic development and neighborhood preservation.”

There were 1,250 active short-term rental listings in Hamilton as of November 2022, with 80 per cent of those defined as entire homes or apartments.
