The Zero Theorem

The Zero Theorem is a science-fiction film directed by Terry Gilliam, who has called it the third part of an “Orwellian triptych” following 1985’s Brazil and 1995’s 12 Monkeys. The plot is a little hard to describe, but the official synopsis does a pretty good job:
An eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst works on a mysterious project aimed at discovering the purpose of existence—or the lack thereof—once and for all. However, it is only once he experiences the power of love and desire that he is able to understand his very reason for being.
Christoph Waltz stars as the programmer, Qohen Leth, and is backed by a supporting cast that includes David Thewlis, Melanie Thierry, Lucas Hedges, Ben Whishaw, Peter Stormare, Tilda Swinton, and Matt Damon as a character named Management.
The budget that Gilliam had to work with for The Zero Theorem wasn’t as large as he’s used to, challnging the filmmaker to make the best of the situation. “Having not worked with a budget this small for several decades,” he explains, “I was forced to work fast and instinctively, pressured only by the lack of time and money. We relied on the freedom to spin on a dime, to make outrageous creative leaps. The results surprised even me. I’m proud to have been part of The Zero Theorem.”
The Zero Theorem is rated 14A.
