‘Participaction’ has given children and youth in this country a D- on it’s annual report card on physical activity. Only 9% of Canadians age 5-17 are getting 60 minutes of vigorous daily activity. Whether it’s helicopter parents or restrictive rules at school yards, the report says that today’s kids don’t have the freedom to just play.

“When kids are outdoors unsupervised in unstructured activities they take more risks. They build their confidence to do more things and different things and build more resiliency in being active and building an active lifestyle later on.” Says Brian Timmons from McMaster University

In fact, the report says that kids in grade 5 & 6 get 20% more activity when they are not monitored by an adult.
