Your Home, Your Vote: read Hudak’s lips – no new taxes

With the election just 15 days away, the provincial party leaders are courting votes from Belleville to Hamilton.

Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty started his day in Belleville at the Kellogg plant, which is about to add another production line and create 48 jobs. The Liberals say they will use incentives to triple the number of successful Ontario start up companies in the next five years.

CHCH News was in Brampton where Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak invited the media into the Grewal home, which was billed as a typical double-income middle class family.

Hudak played tape of Dalton McGuinty from previous elections, promising not to raise taxes; and said he believes the Liberals will raise taxes if elected again.

He talked about the Taxpayer Protection Act, which says if a party wants to raise taxes, it has to file its intent with the elections officer.

“This law is supposed to force them to have a referendum so people can have a say. Today I submitted my letter, I say I will not raise taxes. Taxes are high enough as it is.”

Hudak says he would strengthen the Taxpayer Protection Act. The Liberals say in the past, Hudak twice voted to override the act.

McGuinty is in Georgetown this afternoon and the Canada Chamber of Commerce in Toronto tonight. Hudak will also be in Toronto later, and NDP leader Andrea Horwath was in Toronto this morning, promising a breastfeeding strategy and birthing centres with midwives.

She came under fire today too. Liberals have jumped on Niagara-area candidate Anthony Marco. They found some inflammatory podcasts he posted in the last year on among other things, Nazi Germany.

Advance polls open

Ballot boxes for the Ontario election are now set up.

Advance polling stations open today, giving voters a chance to cast their ballots over the next ten days.

Locations of advance polls are listed on your voter card; they’re also available on the Elections Ontario website. A reminder: you need to bring your notice of registration card with you, along with your id.

Debate next week

All three leaders will debate the issues that matter to you, on CHCH next Tuesday.
That’s September 27th from 6:30 until 8:00 p-m. Andrea Horwath, Dalton McGuinty and Tim Hudak will take questions submitted by the public.

Youngest campaigner?

An eight year old girl is campaigning in Hamilton today on behalf of a group called Environmental Defence.

Penelope Plessas and her group hope to get the provincial leaders and the public to pay more attention to environmental issues during the campaign.

“I love the environment. I care about it and I want to protect it. Plants, trees, animals: we’re all connected.”

Penelope is spreading her message across Southern Ontario but says it’s a non-partisan campaign.
