York bus drivers to strike Monday

York Region Transit and and VIVA bus drivers will walk off the job after midnight, halting service throughout the region for commuters Monday morning.


The Amalgamated Transit Unit announced the job action after 6 p.m. Sunday.

All together, about 560 bus operators and maintenance staff at Miller Transit and First Student are affected.

Miller Transit is the private company that provides 51 routes throughout Markham, Richmond Hill, Whitchurch-Stouffville and parts of Vaughan. First Student runs 29 routes in the northern part of York region.

Meanwhile, talks continued between the union representatives and GO Transit on Sunday.

GO bus drivers are also set to strike Monday morning, but union officials say they are hopeful a deal can be reached.
