The remains of a Hamilton soldier who died near the end of the First World War have been buried in France.

The remains of Private Alexander Johnston were discovered in France in 2008, but were only identified in March through DNA testing.

The defence department says Johnston was killed in battle on September 29th, 1918; less than two months before the armistice.

Johnston’s relatives were at the burial with full military honours Tuesday.

Johnston was born in Scotland in 1885 and moved to Hamilton in his late 20s.
