Defence department officials have identified the remains of a First World War soldier.

The remains are those of Private Alexander Johnston of Hamilton.
Johnston was killed during the battle of the Canal du Nord on September 29th, 1918 – less than two months before the end of the war.
His remains were discovered 3 years ago, along with 2 collar badges of the 78th battalion, the Winnipeg Grenadiers.
The remains were identified through mitochondrial DNA testing.
A burial service with full military honours will take place in France in October.
