Work on downbound Claremont Access to begin in May

The City of Hamilton announced Wednesday that the downbound lanes on the Claremont Access will remain closed all summer, with work not expected to begin until May.

During an inspection on Feb. 27, a city consultant noticed a bulge in the steel wall and concerns were raised about the stability of the escarpment.

The closure between Hunter and Upper James streets was announced on March 1 due to “urgent” erosion concerns.

On March 14, the city began exploring short-term approaches that would allow for the re-opening of the access, which includes relieving pressure by removing some steel walls before working on removing larger walls.

However, Hamilton staff say a short-term fix to the problem is not feasible, instead a permanent solution will begin as early as May.

The city says the access lanes are expected to re-open in late August or September.
