Woman, 68, dead after fire at Hamilton Mountain apartment

Hamilton police say a 68-year-old woman is dead after a fire at a Mountain apartment Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to a four-storey apartment building at 805 Concession St. East for reports of a structure fire.

Firefighters searched the basement apartment unit filled with heavy smoke as soon as they arrived at the scene.

Crews quickly found and removed the woman, and then brought her to hospital.

The woman, who was a resident in the apartment, later died around 3 p.m.

The apartment sustained $200,000 worth of damage.

The Hamilton Fire Department said all other tenants in the building have returned to their apartments and no other injuries have been reported.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to help with the investigation.
