Wolf Totem is a Chinese film co-written and directed by French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet). The movie is based on the novel of the same name and has been selected as China’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at next year’s Academy Awards.
In acclaimed director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film adaptation of Jiang Rong’s best-selling novel, a young Beijing student is sent to live among the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia. Caught between the advance of civilization from the south and the nomads’ traditional enemies – the marauding wolves – to the north; humans and animals, residents and invaders alike, struggle to find their true place in the world.
The wolves used in the film had to be raised from cubs so they would be familiar with the crew. “Until our wolves grew to adults, I continued to work on my other film, BLACK GOLD,” says Annaud. “The Chinese production had financed the preparation, agreeing that the film would be completed in three years. We acquired wolf babies, and they grew up in specially designed growth parks under constant surveillance. We worked with one of the most famous canine trainers in the world, Canadian Andrew Simpson, who settled in Beijing for three years.”
The film will be screened at the following theatres across Canada on September 11:
