What is the worst city for women to live in?

The Kitchener-Waterloo area has been named the worst place to live in the country, if you’re a woman. But Hamilton isn’t much better. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives looked at the gender gap in 25 cities. The study shows women still don’t get equal treatment when it comes to pay, leadership and security.
Economic and personal security, education, heath and leadership for women, based on those indicators out of 25 Canadian cities, Hamilton comes in 20th.
The Canadian Centre for Policy alternatives’ study finds while women make up 35% of senior management in the city, only 1 in 4 councillors are female.
In Hamilton, women make about 72% of what men earn, in the tri-cities, the gap widens.
While the study shows employment levels are higher than average in Kitchener Waterloo and Cambridge, the region also has one of the largest wage gaps. Women earn just 66% of what men make overall.
Danielle Faber, a digital marketing strategist states that there is a relation there. Kitchener Waterloo is a tech hub and there are many engineers which is traditionally a male dominated career.
“Every female leader should be looking around today and saying what am I going to do to make a difference and that includes mentoring young women.”
Waterloo City Councillor Melissa Durrell notes it’s a Canada-wide issue..
“I’m glad we’re having the conversation now and I think that this is a good time for people to actually look around and say what’s going on here.”
Victoria, British Columbia, where women outnumber men among elected officials, came out on top. That city also has a smaller than average wage gap, although that’s partially due to men’s salaries coming in below the national average.
