The Brant County Health Unit says it has detected West Nile virus.

The health unit says mosquitos collected from a pond in St. George have tested positive for the virus.

There have been no reports of human cases.

West Nile can cause Seniors and people with underlying illnesses to become very sick.

Residents are asked to help prevent the spread by getting rid of water-filled containers to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

It is also advised to wear light-coloured long sleeves, use approved insect repellent, and avoid being outdoors early evening to morning when mosquitoes are most active and ready to bite.
