Hamilton Public Health is cautioning residents after a case of West Nile Virus was confirmed in Dundas.

The current risk for Hamilton has moved from low to moderate based on the positive results. The case is the first of the year, and the earliest in a season so far.

One batch of mosquitoes in Dundas tested positive on Tuesday. It was one of 30 traps set weekly across the city.

Public Health Services is reminding residents that the best defense against mosquitoes are repellents with DEET, and wearing clothing that covers most of the body when in an area known for mosquitoes.

The majority of people who contract West Nile Virus will not experience any sickness, but a small percentage may have a more serious illness resulting in hospitalization.
