West leg of Sherman Access reopens

After five months of construction, the west leg of the Sherman access and the Wentworth stairs are now open.
The west leg of the busy mountain access was closed in July to allow crews to repair the retaining wall that keeps debris from the escarpment from falling onto the roadway.
At the same time, the footings on the Wentworth stairs were repaired and work was done to alleviate erosion along the footpath.
Both reopened Dec. 21, about a month later than originally planned.
The work cost about $3 million.
The city says additional maintenance work will be done in 2018.
