It is one of the biggest eyesores on Hamiltons’ waterfront, 40 acres of harbour land used as a shunting yard by CN rail. For over 2 decades the city has tried to convince CN rail to move the tracks and now with 800 acres of industrial land on the former Stelco site for sale, waterfront advocates say the city must act now! “The window of opportunity for the Stelco land is now. I think it’s key that the city do everything in their power now to secure land from the Stelco properties to be able to relocate there.” Bob Charters from the Waterfront Trust.

CN will not publicly discuss the prospect of relocating the shunting yard but it has moved rail yards in other cities. As for how much it would cost the City of Hamilton to buy the land from CN, the last estimate in the 1990’s was $100 million. Still the chair of the Waterfront Trust says, reclaiming the land is not only a possibility it’s an absolute necessity.
