The $58-million West Harbour Go Station has been open since last summer’s Pan-Am Games, yet it’s still not finished.

Over a 3 day span, an average of 33 people hopped on the 2 Toronto-bound trains that depart the West Harbour station during the 6:00 am hour.

15 minutes away in Burlington, it’s survival of the fittest to park and sprint to catch the 7:15 train from Aldershot to Union Station and many commuters are from Hamilton.

One commuter says “it’s just a lot easier to get here and park than to go to Hamilton. There is more frequent times for when I leave at night because my end of day is inconsistent so this is the Go-Train Station of choice.

Metrolinx says that the entire West Harbour station will be completed by the end of the summer. By that time you could expect more HSR buses to ride in and out of the station, you could expect more parking spots, but don’t expect more trains, because more trains will take some time.

When it comes to the much-desired all-day service. Metrolinx says we might have to wait until 2026. Both expansions are dependant on Metrolinx’s negotiations with the Canadian National Railway, who shares the railyard.

Hamilton, specifically the north-end, has a lot to gain with a fully-functioning and accessible West Harbour Station and so far, condo developers looking for a good investment are buying up land within walking distance of the station. The city hopes more businesses can see past the construction site.

Metrolinx also added that construction of a much larger go station on Centennial Parkway is expected to start next year with a completion date of 2020.
