A Welland man was sent to hospital with critical injuries following a residential fire on Clare Avenue Friday evening.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services acting Fire Chief Adam Eckhart says the fire broke out around 8:30 p.m. He says the fire started in the basement of the home and extended into the main floor and attic area.

Once they arrived, firefighters entered the home and removed two people from the main floor. They were informed one more person was still in the house. “Our crews searched the home and identified a male patient in the basement,” said Eckhart.” He was unconscious at the time, and they provided care.” The patient was sent to Welland hospital with serious injuries.

The other two occupants were assessed by paramedics.

The Ontario Fire Marshall was notified and crews continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
