Weather causes travel issues at Pearson

At Pearson International Airport Wednesday, there were more than 100 flight delays and cancellations.

A spokesperson from the Greater Toronto Airport Authority said that 25% of their flights have been cancelled.

On a regular day, the airport will see about 16-hundred flights — so, we’re looking at 400 flights being cancelled. A lot of the cancellations involve other cities that have also really been hit hard by the storm.  Places like Baltimore, Hartford and Syracuse.

A lot of the planes destined for the south have successfully taken off. Those destinations would include Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale.

The airport has brought extra crews on to work to keep the runways clear. The de-icing crews are working very hard. They had actually started to make contingency plans earlier on in the weekend, looking ahead at the forecast to what they were expecting, which is something that they do on a regular basis — constantly look at the operations to see where they can improve. And certainly this winter has given them a real test on their abilities to keep things running smoothly.

There are some disgruntled people here. But for the most part, travellers are anticipating what is going on and are getting here as soon as possible to try and give themselves as much time as they can — whether they have to take off or they have to sit and wait.
