Wasted Water

It’s another hot and humid week with a heat warning from Environment Canada. Temperatures are expected to be in the thirties but it’s expected to feel even hotter in the forties and the hot weather is even more challenging with the lack of rain. There’s water restrictions in place in several municipalities right now.

During the spring and summer months, home builders tapping into city water are expected to turn it off when they’re done for the day but a neighbour in Waterdown filmed a construction site that disregarded that direction. For weeks water has been left running from hoses in the Waterdown Meadows Development by Rosehaven and Aspen Ridge homes.

Michael King captured videos that show constant water flow from hoses along the site. It’s water that has no meter attached to it and there’s no way of knowing just how much has drained away and the city is on the hook for those wasted costs.

“I’ve called and called, and left emails. I thought something would be done right away. Everyone’s just pushing the pencil and directing the emails to somebody else.”

According to the city, the developer pays a small construction fee to use the water but the director of Hamilton Water Dan McKinnon says their use far surpasses what they’ve paid and that they will be following up on these complaints.

A site manager from Aspen Ridge came over to us and we told him about the videos, he became defensive and told Michael that he was trespassing and that he’s never to come on the site again. Aspen Ridge didn’t get back to us with a comment but Rosehaven Homes issued this statement and admitted to wasting water,

“Rosehaven Homes would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention. Our policy during the spring/summer and early fall months is to ensure all water is turned off when not in use, and we will be reiterating this policy to our trades and site personal again to ensure water is not wasted.”
