Warm spring jump-starts lilacs

The warm weather we’ve experienced this spring has given our gardens a great head start..

At the Royal Botanical Gardens, the world’s most diverse lilac collection is blooming early. It boasts more than 600 species of the scented beauties. The RBG’s Carlo Balistrieri says with the warm March we experienced flowers were beginning to bloom ahead of schedule, including the lilacs.

“The concern was that with the early spring we’ve had, particularly in March things were pushing along too rapidly. Some of the plants here at the Royal Botanical Gardens did bloom earlier than normal. The lilacs are maybe a week and a half ahead of schedule right now, but we anticipate a great display for the end of May and the early part of June.”

Visitors can go to the RBG and explore the garden grounds through a number of walks and collections.
