War memorial vandalized

With less than two weeks to go before Remembrance day, police are looking for a vandal after a war memorial on Spring St. in Niagara Falls was vandalized with spray paint. The tagging isn’t the first time the Royal Canadian legion branch 479 has been targeted. Just a day before the legions’ Canadian flag and provincial flag were stolen right off the poles.
“It is degrading. I mean you work so hard to make to the property look good and it is defaced like this in memory of our veterans. It is sad. It’s really sad.” Louis Frenette, Royal Canadian legion.
Cameras from the legion captured images. It shows a group of people walking past the cenotaph just after 3 o’clock on Sunday. Seconds later one of them returns spraying the letters S-S-C-F before running away. The paint was removed from the memorial this morning but the monument wasn’t the only thing tagged. A tree across the street from the legion and just down the road two hydro poles with the same initials.
Niagara police say they’re not aware of this particular tag but say its street crime unit is investigating. It is not clear if the stolen flags are connected, but police are looking to lay both theft and mischief charges.
