Volunteers build inukshuks on trail

If you’re walking along Hamilton’s Chedoke Rail Trail this weekend you may notice stone inukshuks along the path.
The statues represent the lives of missing and murdered aboriginal women.
A group of volunteers has been building them since last month. In total they plan to construct 1,182 inukshuks. The project is meant to foster conversation and educate the public.
People walking the trail today thought it was a good initiative.
“It just made me think why they’re there, it’s kind of sad but I think it`s really nice that people are coming out here and doing things like that so that people are aware of it because people should be thinking of things like that.”
“I like em. Yeah, we really like them, we think that’s actually a great reason to do it. It does bring awareness.”
As of April, 174 aboriginal women remain missing in Canada. In their election platform, the Liberals pledged to “immediately” launch a national inquiry into missing and murder indigenous women and girls in the country.
