Vigil mourns Six Nations suicides

A sacred fire was lit in Ohsweken this morning, commemorating the lives of Six Nations people who have taken their own lives.

Community members gathered for the start of the 72-hour vigil, sharing their stories of loss and healing. Vigil organizer Brooke Johnson says suicide is far too common in the Six Nations community.

“I started the group because I had actually heard of a 13-year-old girl taking her life, and myself, I had lost three cousins to suicide. I just want it to stop.”

“We need to connect more and address those issues from the residential schools that have
gone on for so many generations and I want to see that cycle stop.”

The sacred fire will burn until Sunday morning at 10.
