VIA train that crashed was speeding
(Video updated) The train was going more than four times above limit.
The Transportation Safety Board says train 92, en route from Niagara Falls to Toronto, was travelling at approximately 67 mph when it was switching tracks.
The maximum authorized speed there is 15 mph.
The train’s black box also shows the brakes were not applied before the crash.
CN, which owns the tracks and leases them to VIA, has also said the tracks were investigated before the crash and were in good condition.
The police have ruled out any criminal wrongdoing.
Investigators will now examine the rail traffic control communications, design and function of the switch, functioning of the signal system to see if any of these factors influenced the three engineers, all of whom were killed in last Sunday’s derailment in Burlington.
