The first phase of renovations to make Hamilton’s Gore Park more pedestrian friendly are nearing completion. Today a contractor began installing the final images on the Veterans’ Place Memorial near the Cenotaph. Images of men and woman who have served our country are being installed in 9 enclaves adjacent to the Cenotaph in Gore Park.

“Time has moved on since that was unveiled in 1923 so the culture department continued to hear the desire from the community to represent the continuing timeline.” Hamilton manger of landscape architectural services Le Ann Seely says representatives from the Army, Air Force, Navy, veterans and historians were consulted on the space. “They wanted to represent emotions and feelings in a very understandable way to anyone>

Using a combination of images and words, each panel has a theme like “homefront” “humanity” and “homecoming.” At night, the enclaves will be illuminated but during the day you’ll notice each panel is highly reflective, so you can see yourself in the image.

“The ones on the memorial wall have medals that are on it. they’re positioned hight wise so you can feel like it’s on you and you can imagine yourself in that scenario.” Says Seely

The over $2 million renovation to the Veterans’ place block is just phase one of the Gore Park initiative. It’s expected to take a few days to complete the installation and an official public reveal is planned for May 8th.
