After five years of terrorizing bank tellers, a man suspected of being Canada’s most notorious bank robber has been arrested in Geneva, Switzerland. Known as the vaulter, he robbed banks all over the country including Hamilton and York Region.
We have only ever known the robber as the vaulter bandit. He’s known for his technique of jumping over bank counters during his heists. But today we learned his identity. 53 year old Jeffrey James Shulman has been arrested.
Police have put a name to the face known only as the vaulter, a robber who jumped over bank counters stealing money. Police arrested 53 year old Jeffrey James Shulman in Geneva Switzerland on Tuesday. It’s believed Shulman lives in France.
York regional police issued the international arrest warrant. Over the past 5 years police have held a number of news conferences, trying to catch the vaulter bandit.
It was September 9, 2010. A man robbed the Scotia Bank on Stone Church road in Hamilton. Over the past five years he hit 12 banks in York Region, 4 in the city of Calgary, 2 in Peel and one each in Ottawa and Toronto.
The Canadian Bankers Association had offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. That’s the highest amount the association has ever offered.
The reward money will only be given out if police determine any of the information they received was key to the arrest and conviction. The “Vaulter Bandit” is not your average armed robber. Police even went as far as to say he was polite and calm.
The surveillance video shows him bare faced and he does not make any effort to hide his identity in the initial stages of the robberies.
Shulman was arrested without a fight by plain clothed police officers while he was driving a compact car on a Geneva street Tuesday. York police say they won’t release any information about the arrest because it was not in Canada.
