Upsized graffiti

Some business owners in downtown Hamilton are worried about how much graffiti is happening in their neighbourhood and how much of it is all over their personal property.

Two days before Christmas an entire wall of a store was sprayed with paint. A vandal even took to social media flaunting his work using the hashtag, extinguishers. The use of fire extinguishers is a graffiti trend spreading worldwide. They can project paint far above normal reach and videos online show kids of all ages using them, and teaching others the how-to.

When this happens in an area trying to grow, it gets messy, like the one in the International Village, near King and Ferguson.
“We do our best to keep our chunk of property clean. Everybody on our strip we work really hard.”

This kind of graffiti has been described by some locals as an “eyesore”, “as defacing the community’s walls” and while it is a major concern, there are even bigger concerns.

Police say this kind of vandalism is a growing problem but one without a price tag. No one has totalled all the costs for the victims.
