Unifor to elect new National President at convention in Toronto this week

More than 1,800 Unifor members, including nearly 1,000 voting delegates from across Canada are attending the union’s 4th Constitutional Convention.
Delegates will be electing a new leader after former National President, Jerry Dias, stepped down. The delegates will also vote for the next Secretary-Treasurer, Regional Directors and on key priorities and initiatives.
Dias stepped down earlier this year after he was charged with violating the code of ethics and democratic practices of the union’s constitution. He led the union since 2013 and was reelected in 2016 and 2019.
The convention will start today at the Toronto Convention Centre and run until August 12.
The election of the National President, Secretary-Treasurer and Regional Directors will take place on Wednesday.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector. It represents over 315,000 workers.
